Manitoulin Family Vacation

There is so much to do!

IMG_1837 Relax and Play

Relax by your cabin while your kids play in the sandbox… swim in the shallow bay or dive off  the floating dock… or play in the…

Tree Forts  2009 was the year of the tree fort.  100% kid-created, there’s the cedar fort,

the ‘boy’s fort’ and the ultra-secret ‘jungle fort’ which the girls try to keep to themselves, but Isaac and Carey get free passes (I think they just have to agree to be nice).

Catching fish  is easy, just tie on a spoon, or buy worms and minnows from the nearby live bait shop, and cast right off the dock!  IMG_1921

Finding Fossils on the lakeshore is easy at Hutchinson’s.  The fossils on this shoreline are some of the oldest lifeforms on the planet…ancient coral is like crystalline honeycomb…strange horn-shaped fossils and imprints of microorganisms are plenty!

Swimming in the crystal clear waters Lake Manitou is spring fed, deep and clear.  The water is cool and the shorline is rocky…bring water shoes!  Diving is possible off our floating dock, just 10 m. out.  The bay in front of cabins 3 – 7 is great for wading around.  Children ages 5 – 16 tend to jump in off our dock, or dive in off the nearby government dock.  All within clear view of the central firepit area, so you can relax in the sun and/or shade and still be in eye’s view!

Canada Day Fireworks Celebration

Canada Day Celebration Every year Ryan and Sarah host Canada Day fireworks for the guests. Some locals come and bring extra fireworks. This event seems to get better every year!

Summer wading in the Manitou River

Summer wading in the Manitou River

River Wading   The Manitou River starts at Hutchinson’s Cabins. The dam is controlled by the MNR and in the summer levels are low enough to allow fun wading. Children can wade, swim, and net for crayfish, frogs, minnows, mudpuppies and suntans!
River Wading The Manitou river is full of life. Usually the summer depth is about 1 to 2 feet deep.   Bring your water shoes, a net, and a bucket…minnows, crayfish, mudpuppies, ducks, herons, frogs…wade for miles and go back in time!

ps, we are located in Sandfield (check google maps link in ‘getting here’ tab). This is just 15 minutes from the ferry landing at SouthBaymouth, or 45 minutes from the swing bridge in Little Current.
